I found this article inspiring. I think it takes a talented teacher to be able to work with classes of at-risk students in a school that is probably not the nicest. I've always admired teachers who could convince a classroom of kids who could care less about education that reading or math or history is important. At one point Laycock says that his training in jujitsu and kickboxing prepares him for his work in the classroom where students need a teacher who will fight for them. I believe that's true for all classrooms. I think students deserve a teacher who is willing to put in the work to help them learn and develop as people.
Admittance to a Better Life
I think this article just goes to show the power of education, and at the same time how precious it is. It also shows that the more knowledge you have and the more well-rounded you are, can open your eyes to different points of views. I don't realize how lucky I am to be able to be here at college while some people are stuck in a "rabbit's hole," unable to get out. Reading this article about Oatman reminded me of how precious my education is and how it has the power to change your life.
This I Believe
This was a great article because I think it really shows how a person's experiences can create an educated person just as much as schooling can. The author's Nona was an incredibly strong woman to go through so much in one lifetime. Her experiences in Italy (how she grew up, how she got married) are things that I can't imagine experiencing. But I'm sure those experiences shaped her into the person she is and taught her many things. The author says at one point, "Looking back, I realize that the most important things she taught me were valuable life lessons about patience and endurance, and probably most importantly to have faith." This quote also shows that being educated in about learning values, not just lessons from a classroom.
